Is Christ God?

Questions about the one that is called Jesus Christ (Hebrew name was/is Ye’shua)

Who did the Father say He was?

Who did the apostles say He was?

Who did the Pharisees say He was claiming to be?

Who did Christ say He was?

For what crime did they crucify Him?

This section is to address the evidence in scripture that shows Who is Jesus/ Ye’shua.  Why is this important?  You can follow another individual that is called Jesus and is not “the Jesus” of the bible, thus you would be placing your hope of salvation in someone else.  This is a salvation issue. There are religions that claim to be “Christian”, but follow “a god” and not “the God and Savior”.  This is extremely vital to know so as to have confidence in knowing that you’re saved.

                                                                                                                   Bible verses on;

Christ is God

Isaiah 9:6-7 / For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders.  And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  This verse speaks of the Son of God (Jesus).  Here Jesus (Ye’Shua) is called God.

John 1:1-3/verse 14. Gen 1:1, Isa 45:12/18/21/22 & John 1:3 are speaking on the same God-Christ.

It should be noted that in the original language that the bible was translated from is the Hebrew and Koine’ Greek.  So to get a better understanding of the meaning, we suggest you look verses up to see for yourself.  My favorite is John 1:1 – the last three words – Word was God.  In the Greek it states Logos en Theos or Word (Jesus) was God.  And in the literal Greek – Theos en Logos.

John-1:18- No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, He has made Him known.

John 8:19 19 They said therefore to him, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me, nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”

John 8:58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM”.

John 10: 17-18 Jesus states that He has the authority to lay His life down and the authority to take it back up.  No one takes it from Him.

John 10:30 “I and the Father are one.”

John 10:33 (What the enemies of Jesus said) The Jews answered Him, “it is not for a good work that we are stoning you but for blasphemy, because you, being a man, make yourself God.

John 14:6-7/9-10 Jesus said to him (Thomas), “I Am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. 7-If you had known Me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know Him and have seen Him. 8b-Whoever has seen Me has seen the Father. 10-Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me?

John 20:28-Thomas said to Christ “my Lord and My God”.

And speaking on the same God, these next three verses sum it up;

Hebrews 13:8 – Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Psalm 90:2 – from eternity to eternity, You are God

Isaiah 43:10 (b)No god was formed before Me, and there will be none after Me. I, I AM God.

Acts 20:28   Care for the church of God, which He obtained with His own blood. This verse clearly states this is Gods blood which He shed on the cross.

Romans 9:5 Christ who is God over All.

1 Corinthians 15:47 – “the first man (Adam) was of the earth, made of dust, the second (Jesus)Man is the Lord from heaven”.

Col 2:9-“For in Him all fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form”.

Hebrews 1:8 and Psalm 45:6-“But of the Son He (God the Father) says “Thy throne, oh God, is forever and ever; a scepter of uprightness is the scepter of Thy kingdom”.

Rev 1:8-Jesus speaking said “I Am the Alpha and the Omega”, says the Lord God, “who is, who was and who is to come, The Almighty

Rev 1:17-18 “And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last.

18 – “I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.

Rev 2:8 “And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write, ‘These things says the First and the Last, who was dead, and came to life:

Rev 22:13 Jesus states- “I Am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end”.

Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name “Immanuel” God with us.

Matthew 1:23-“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel, (which means, God with us).

Isaiah 45:5-6, vs 14-15, Isaiah 45:5-6  am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:

45:6  That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else.

45:14-15  Thus saith the LORD, The labour of Egypt, and merchandise of Ethiopia and of the Sabeans, men of stature, shall come over unto thee, and they shall be thine: they shall come after thee; in chains they shall come over, and they shall fall down unto thee, they shall make supplication unto thee, saying, Surely God is in thee; and there is none else, there is no God.  15 – Verily thou art a God that hidest thyself, O God of Israel, the Saviour.

Isaiah 48:12-13 Jesus also said “I Am he; I am the first and the last”.

Christ accepted worship/only God is to be worshiped

Exod 34:14/Jer 25:6/Matt 4:7 worship no other gods.

Matthew 4:10 “Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.'”

Hebrews 1:6-“And when He (God the Father) again brings the first-born into the world, He says ‘and let all the angels of God worship Him” This passage is God the Father speaking about Jesus from verse 1 thru 8.

Matt. 2:2, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?  For we saw His star in the east, and have come to worship Him.”

Matt. 2:11, “And they came into the house and saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell down and worshiped Him; and opening their treasures they presented to Him gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh.”

Matt. 14:33, “And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “You are certainly God’s Son!”

Matt. 28:9, “And behold, Jesus met them and greeted them.  And they came up and took hold of His feet and worshiped Him.”

John 9:35-38, “Jesus heard that they had put him out; and finding him, He said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” 36 He answered and said, “And who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?” 37 Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him, and He is the one who is talking with you.” 38 And he said, “Lord, I believe.” And he worshiped Him.”

Rev 19:10 an angel instructs John to worship God only. If we follow or put our trust in any other name, ie a different/created christ (as taught in Mormonism and Jehovah Witnesses beleifes) then the one of the Bible, then we are trusting our salvation under another name (Acts 4:12). Also we are told in Galatians 1 that anyone, including angels that give a different gospel are accursed

Christ as Creator

John 1:3-All things were made by Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.

Ephesians 3:9 and to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things by Jesus Christ;

Genesis 1:1-In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Isaiah 40:28– Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.

Isaiah 42:5 – Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:

Isaiah 45:18-“for thus says the Lord, Who created the heavens, Who is God, Who formed it and made it”.

Isaiah 48:12-13 I Am he; I am the first and the last. V13. My hand laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand spread out the heavens (Creator).

Psalm 33:6 By the Word of the Lord the heavens were made.  John 1:3 claims that the Word (Jesus) created all things.

Colossians 1:16-For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created by Him and for Him.

Only God can forgive sin

Mark 2-When he entered again into Capernaum after some days, it was heard that he was in the house. Immediately many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even around the door; and he spoke the word to them. Four people came, carrying a paralytic to him. When they could not come near to him for the crowd, they removed the roof where he was. When they had broken it up, they let down the mat that the paralytic was lying on. Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralytic,”Son, your sins are forgiven you”.

But there were some of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, “Why does this man speak blasphemies like that? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

Immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you reason these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to tell the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven;’ or to say, ‘Arise, and take up your bed, and walk?’ 10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins—he said to the paralytic— 11 “I tell you, arise, take up your mat, and go to your house.”

Matthew 9-He entered into a boat, and crossed over, and came into his own city.Behold, they brought to him a man who was paralyzed, lying on a bed. Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralytic, “Son, cheer up! Your sins are forgiven you.”

Behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man blasphemes.”

Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven;’ or to say, ‘Get up, and walk?’ But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins...” (then he said to the paralytic), “Get up, and take up your mat, and go up to your house.”

Christ/Savior/God

Luke 2:11- for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

John 3:14-15 “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life.

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him (Jesus Christ) shall no perish (Hell), but have eternal life (Heaven).

John 4:42(b) Know that this one is indeed the Savior of the world.

1 John 4:14- We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.

1 John 3:5-You know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there was no sin.

Titus 2:13 Looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus

Acts 13:23 “From this man, according to promise, God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus.

Acts 4:12 “ And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved”

Ephesians 5:23 He Himself is the Savior of the body.

Philippians 3:20 For citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ;

2 Timothy 1:10 but now has been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus

1 Timothy 4:10-For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers.

Hebrews 9:28-so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for Salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.

2 Peter 1:1  To those who have obtained a faith of equal privilege with ours through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ.

Isaiah 53:12-Because He poured out Himself to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; Yet He Himself bore the sin of many, and interceded for the transgressors.

Psalm 22, Isaiah 53, spoke on the coming of the Messiah, hundreds of years in advance.

Seeing God face to face

Exodus 24:9-11, Exodus 33:11, Exodus 6:2-3, and John 1:18

  1. Has seen
    1. (Gen. 17:1)–“Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; Walk before Me, and be blameless;”
    2. (Gen. 18:1) Now the LORD appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, while he was sitting at the tent door in the heat of the day.”
    3. (Exodus 6:2-3)–“God spoke further to Moses and said to him, “I am the LORD; 3 and I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name, LORD, I did not make Myself known to them.”
    4. (Exodus 24:9-11)–“Then Moses went up with Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, 10 and they saw the God of Israel; and under His feet there appeared to be a pavement of sapphire, as clear as the sky itself. 11 Yet He did not stretch out His hand against the nobles of the sons of Israel; and they saw God, and they ate and drank.”
    5. (Num. 12:6-8)–“He said, “Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, shall make Myself known to him in a vision.  I shall speak with him in a dream. 7″Not so, with My servant Moses, He is faithful in all My household; 8With him I speak mouth to mouth, Even openly, and not in dark sayings, And he beholds the form of the LORD. Why then were you not afraid To speak against My servant, against Moses?”
    6. (Acts 7:2), “And he [Stephen] said, ‘Hear me, brethren and fathers! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran . . . ‘”
  2. Has not seen
    1. (Exodus 33:20)–“But He [God] said, “You cannot see My face, for no man can see Me and live!”
    2. (John 1:18)–“No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.”
    3. (John 5:37)–“”And the Father who sent Me, He has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form.”
    4. (John 6:46)–“Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God; He has seen the Father.”
    5. (1 Tim. 6:15-16)–“He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone possesses immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see. To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen.”

It is evident above that God was seen. But, considering the “can’t-see-God” verses, some would understandably argue that there would be a contradiction. One explanation offered is that the people were seeing visions, or dreams, or the Angel of the LORD (Num. 22:22-26Judges 13:1-21) and not really God Himself. But the problem is that the verses cited above do not say vision, dream, or Angel of the LORD. They say that people saw God (Exodus 24:9-11), God was seen and that He appeared as God Almighty (Exodus 6:2-3).

At first, this is difficult to understand. God Almighty was seen (Exodus 6:2-3), which means it was not the Angel of the Lord, for an angel is not God Almighty. And at least Moses saw God and not in a vision or dream–as the LORD Himself attests in Num. 12:6-8. If these verses mean what they say, then we naturally assume we have a contradiction. Actually, the contradiction exists in our understanding–not in the Bible, which is always the case with alleged Biblical contradictions.

The solution is simple. All you need to do is accept what the Bible says. If the people of the OT were seeing God, the Almighty God, and Jesus said that no one has ever seen the Father (John 6:46), then they were seeing God Almighty but not the Father. It was someone else in the Godhead. I suggest that they were seeing the Word before He became incarnate. In other words, they were seeing Jesus.

If God is a Trinity, then John 1:18 is not a problem either because in John, chapter one, John writes about the Word (Jesus) and God (the Father). In verse 14, it says that the Word became flesh. In verse 18, it says that no one has seen God. Since Jesus is the Word, God, then, refers to the Father. This is typically how John writes of God: as a reference to the Father. We see this verified in Jesus’ own words in John 6:46 where He said that no one has ever seen the Father. Therefore, Almighty God was seen but not the Father. It was Jesus before His incarnation. There is more than one person in the Godhead, and the doctrine of the Trinity must be true.
