The Holy Spirit in Scripture

Holy Spirit 104 times in the NKJV. (non-exhaustive list)

  1. Matthew 1:18, 20, Mary was overshadowed with the Holy Spirit. If the Holy Spirit is the mind of God, then how could he overshadow and provide what was needed for pregnancy?
  2. Matthew 12:32, Mark 3:29, Luke 12:10, this is dealing with blaspheming the Holy Spirit. If the Holy Spirit was the mind of God and not an individual then it would not make sense.
  3. Mathew 28:19, this is where Ye’shua commanded for us to go out and make disciples of all nations, baptizing the in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. If the Holy Spirit is the mind of God, then it also doesn’t make sense to baptize them in the name of the mind of God.
  4. Luke 3:22 Talks about how the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove. If the H.S. was the mind of God, then how could He have a body?
  5. Luke 12:12, “For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say”. This shows that He makes choices and gives words to say, as an individual.
  6. John 14:26, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will remembrance all things that I said to you”. The context is that He is referring to an individual.
  7. Acts 1:16, The Holy Spirit spoke in this verse as an individual.
  8. Acts 5:3 When Ananias and Sapphira lied about the land price in which they were killed for by God. In verse 3 it says the lie was against the Holy Spirit, and in verse 4 it states that the lie wasn’t against man, but God. The Holy Spirit is shown here as God.
  9. Acts 13:2/21:11/28:25 in these verse the Holy Spirit speaks.
  10. Acts 13:4 the Holy Spirit sends people to locations.
  11. Acts 15:28 the Holy Spirit has independent thought here
  12. Acts 16:6 The Holy Spirit forbid preaching in Asia.
  13. Acts 20:23 The Holy Spirit testifies.
  14. Acts 20:28 the Holy Spirit promoted some to overseers.
  15. Romans 15:16 The Holy Spirit sanctifies.
  16. 1 Cor 2:13 The Holy Spirit teaches.
  17. 1 Cor 6:19 the Holy Spirit “Who is in you” Who is referenced to as an individual.

The indwelling of God the Holy Spirit in us.

Another aspect of the Holy Spirit is that He actually physically indwells our soul, sometimes referred to as our heart in scripture.  To ” ask Jesus into your heart” is having Him come into your soul to take up residence.  Let’s be clear, there are no passages that state to ask Jesus into your heart.  It’s making the point that if one is “Born Again” (John 3:3), then you are saved, otherwise  the Holy Spirit does not indwell your soul.  Might also want to check out the “how to be saved tab #5”.

A point that was found to be interesting is that prior to the cross where Jesus completed the covenant between God and man, there was a physical temple where God chose to meet with the Jewish High Priest for the people.  Also, only the priests were baptized (yes, baptism is a Jewish thing that became a Christian practice) to demonstrate that they were a priest of the God of Israel.  After the cross, we as Christians are commanded to be baptized as priests to identify as belonging to Christ.  Before the  cross the physical temple was where God would indwell and then after the cross, our soul became His dwelling place.  Some passages to back up this paragraph up are:

  1. 1 Corinthians 3:16 & 6:19-20 – showing us as the temple of the Holy Spirit.  Even states that we are indwelt by Christ.
  2. 2 Corinthians 6:16  we are the Temple of the H.S. here also.
  3. Romans 8:9-11 – where we see being indwelt by God, 4 times.
  4. Ephesians 4:5-6 One God and Father of all, Who is over all, in all, and living through all.
  5. Ephesians 5:18 be filled with the Holy Spirit
  6. 2 Timothy 1:14 – through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you.
  7. Ezekiel 3:24 – The Holy Spirit entered Ezekiel.

These are just a few places that show His indwelling us.

Did you know there are hundreds of Prophecies that spoke about the coming of Jesus?—–
